NPI Industry reporting
The first step is finding out if your facility needs to report to the NPI. Industry facilities that exceed an NPI reporting threshold should report to the NPI.
Only substances for which an NPI reporting threshold is exceeded are reported to the NPI.
Use the NPI Guide to determine whether substance emissions from your facility have to be reported. The NPI guide will take you step by step through the reporting process. More about the NPI guide.
If your facility is required to report, you need to estimate emissions of NPI substances to air, land and water. Look up your industry's Emission Estimation Technique (EET) manual and refer to the more general EET manuals to find out how to estimate NPI pollutant emissions.
There are nine NPI manuals used by many different sectors:
Emission Estimation Technique manuals are listed both alphabetically and by industry sector.
EET manuals contain detailed information on estimating emissions. Some industry sectors may require one or more EET manuals. The number of EET manuals in a particular sector depends on the number of particular industry processes that give rise to emissions.
Diffuse emissions manuals can also be used to estimate emissions from some sources at your facility (e.g. motor vehicles).
The NPI Guide should be used in conjunction with all manuals.
These are documents that provide advice or guidance on the information that an occupier of a facility is required to provide or retain for NPI reporting purposes, and also emission estimation techniques for the relevant type of facility.
The NPI EET manuals are a comprehensive and effective resource for Australian manufacturing, industrial and service facilities to complete their NPI reporting obligations. They assist facilities in reporting their emissions for inclusion on the NPI database.
Facility operators may use other techniques not specified in the EET Manuals, but only with approval from the relevant state or territory environment agency.
